We have found over the 18 months that we have had the InfoLok system in place, we have developed a new work culture at our site. The operators are now more aware of their own responsibility and accountability. The ease in which unreported bumps and damage can be accredited to individuals has ensured that we have had a massive reduction in accidents and damage. Over the last year we can report a damage record of 0.04% to the racking system.

When we have visitors to our facility, I always ensure that a demonstration of the InfoLok system is included in the tour. I feel this adds greatly to our commitment to our customers, that we take pride in our safe systems of work.

By using the information supplied by suppliers of forktrucks, it became apparent that Log-IT Systems had a robust system with proven industry applications and technical support. It was decided to fit InfoLok Systems to all new forktrucks being delivered across the division.

Within a very short period of time the benefits associated with the above systems have been realised. The number of incidents involving forktrucks has reduced significantly, instances involving forktrucks have been reported in real time giving local managers the ability to carry out adequate investigation, identifying true root causes, thus applying improved procedures and or systems to reduce the likelihood of a repeat occurrence.

Huntsman Tioxide

In late 2001 we at Huntsman Tioxide Ltd decided to try and tackle a problem that had progressively grown worse over the previous years. My remit was to cut down on the damage cost to the company which stood at £40,000 (2001 figure) and have a system of key control to stop unauthorised drivers driving machines they were not licensed for. In the past anyone had access to plant with the key left in the ignition whether licensed or not, and could cause damage to the item of plant or property and if not witnessed or reported get away with it.

With the assistance and experience of Lex Harvey (Finning UK) our mobile plant suppliers we were invited to look at Log-IT Systems, and held an initial meeting between Huntsman Tioxide and Mr Mike King of Log-IT Systems in early 2002. What we heard at this meeting was very impressive, but myself being very cynical about the claims of these all-singing, all-dancing systems we decided to take up the offer to visit one of Log-It Systems' current customer premises to see the systems in operation and talk to members of staff who operate it.

Impressed with what we had seen and heard on this visit, but still unsure about the conditions, they being a cold store and ourselves a chemical plant with a very, very hostile atmosphere (acid,dusts and slurries). After further discussion and assurances we decided to have the system fitted to all our F.L.Ts and Loading Shovels (30 units).

After 2 years of running the system we now have full key control, only drivers with a key fob for the plant he is licensed for can drive, and now that the drivers realise the information that we get from the system the damage cost has been reduced dramatically (£10,000 2003 figure). There is now a culture on the site of owning up to damage caused rather than drivers having the embarrassment of me tracking them down backed up with information from the InfoLok system, this assists us in investigating accidents and instigating improvements where we can.

I have met some of Log-IT Systems potential customers in the last few months and have been happy to demonstrate what benefits the system has given to Huntsman Tioxide.

The Log-IT system was selected because it delivered our needs and much more. Truck speed is automatically reduced on entering the warehouse, increasing pedestrian safety. We have improved our fleet control with reporting of impacts, reduced racking damage, over 50% reduction in tyre spend & awareness of truck utilisation.

Electronic driver licensing even manages driver re-test dates, ensuring drivers hold a current appropriate license for each type of truck. We have also achieved a significant reduction in racking damage.

The excellent software is simple to use, providing valuable management reports. Health and safety is a priority with LINPAC and this system has taken FLT safety to a new level. We have recommended Log-IT Systems to many visitors to our site.

Nestle

At the Nestle Purina site we were concerned with the management of our Forklift trucks. Although our drivers all have RTITB licences and we are quite content with their competency, the problem of safety arose when non-Nestle personnel, who were not authorised, used our trucks without permission, and impact incidents were going unreported.

Removal of keys did not solve the problem, when these ”unauthorised” drivers produced their own keys. In order to help bring this under control Log-IT Systems were requested to fit the InfoLok system to our trucks. The equipment is user friendly and so far the eventual benefit of using this equipment is quite apparent, the back up provided by Log-IT Systems has also proved to be excellent.
